What happens when Drupal 7 support ends?

Our technology director, Steve King, explains everything you need to know about Drupal 7 end of life and how to avoid getting left behind when support ends in January.

What are the risks of staying on Drupal 7?

Risk 1

Compromised security – when updates stop you will face an increased risk of security breaches.

Risk 2

Operating inefficiency – updates will be incompatible with your system meaning compromised website functioning.

Risk 3

Maintenance issues – the latest modules and themes will no longer be available to you and key existing assets will no longer be maintained.

What are your migration options?

You can upgrade to the latest Drupal version, but for optimal flexibility and customisation we highly recommend Webflow. Depending on your specific requirements the benefits include:

  • Security and software updates
  • Flexible and user-friendly content editing
  • Potential cost efficiencies
  • Streamlined time to market

Drupal 7 end of life FAQs

Support for Drupal 7 officially ends on January 5 2025. We answer some of your biggest questions:

You’ll need to download the latest Drupal version, create a local copy of your existing website and a local website for the new CMS. You’ll then have to enable the required upgrade modules, update details in the upgrade path and start the migration. It can be complex, but we do this all the time. Let us help you get started.

Let’s talk

You can upgrade to any currently supported Drupal version. However, to benefit from the all the latest features and ensure optimised performance capabilities we would always recommend opting for the latest release. We’re happy to advise on the right version for you.

Let’s talk

Drupal 7 has been around for a while, which means it no longer offers the performance of newer versions. Migrating your content over to any of the latest iterations, or another CMS, means enhanced security and operational capabilities, plus more intuitive architectures.
